A health and wellness examination is a routine checkup for your pet to assess their general health and well-being. This helps us ensure that your pet is healthy and allows us to detect any health problems early. With early intervention, treatment is most likely to be successful.

How often do we need a wellness exam?

For puppies and kittens, a wellness exam is recommended monthly, coinciding with their puppy and kitten vaccinations. Once they reach adulthood, healthy adults are checked once a year which usually coincides with their annual vaccine booster. Pets age faster than humans do, so for healthy seniors, an examination every 6 months is ideal to ensure that we pick up on any health issues early.

What to expect at a wellness exam?

During your pet’s wellness exam, our veterinarians will perform a thorough physical examination of your pet.

Following the physical examination, we can provide recommendations to optimise the health care of your pet, such as vaccinations, parasite prevention, or further screening tests (e.g., blood tests or medical imaging) that are relevant to your pet.

We will also be able to answer any concerns that you may have regarding your pet’s diet, appetite, exercise, behaviour, dental/grooming care, and other healthcare needs.

Things to prepare before a wellness exam

If your pet has received medical care at another clinic, do bring along any medical records or test reports with you, as this will help avoid repeated tests and allow us to follow up on any previously diagnosed medical conditions.

If you have queries about your pet’s diet, medication, or supplementation, do take pictures of these items so the vet can review them. Take some time to think about any questions you may have regarding your pet’s health, so we won’t miss out on anything on the day of the wellness exam.

It is estimated that 85% of all pets have periodontal disease by the time they are 3 years old. Regular dental care is important to prevent bad breath, gingivitis, tooth infection and other secondary health issues caused by bacterial infections that originate from the mouth.

Vaccination
Similar to human healthcare, vaccination has always been one of the most cost-efficient means of  disease prevention and in improving animal health. Vaccines help to prevent infectious, debilitating, and life-threatening diseases in our pets, and contribute to public health by protecting us from some zoonotic diseases.
Vaccination
Parasite Control
Fleas, ticks, and mites are common external parasites that affect pets. In addition to being exceedingly irritating to the pet, infestations can result in skin problems, allergic reactions, or disease. Internal parasites like worms can also cause serious issues in pets.
