Acupuncture is one aspect of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) that focuses on restoring the energy balance in the body to promote healing. The technique requires the insertion of fine needles into the pet’s body at specific acupuncture points, called meridians, which are believed to be energy channels that transmit energy throughout the dog or cat’s body. By using needles on specific points, acupuncture improves blood circulation and relieves pain.

At Mount Pleasant, we believe in establishing a holistic veterinary practice that combines contemporary Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, in order to achieve the best possible results for your pet.

Which conditions are treated using acupuncture?

Acupuncture is often used to treat dogs with arthritis and joint inflammation. Animals suffering from hip dysplasia, degenerative joint disease, chronic back pain, and/or spinal cord conditions can benefit from acupuncture treatment for pain management.

It also excels at easing some of the side effects associated with cancer and its treatment, diabetes, kidney or liver failure, or pancreatitis.

While acupuncture can alleviate pain and inflammation, conventional medicine should still be the first choice of medical treatment when faced with severe conditions.

What happens during an acupuncture session?

The first appointment with a certified veterinary acupuncturist involves a general health assessment. The veterinary acupuncturist will access the medical history of the patient, lab results, radiographs, and current medical therapy, so they are fully informed about the case. The veterinary acupuncturist will then perform his/her own physical examination, discuss a potential treatment plan, and explain exactly what happens during an acupuncture session.

Even though pets may be a little nervous at the start of the treatment, most become very relaxed after needle insertion. Depending on the conditions addressed, the actual session may last 30-45 minutes. The doctor outlines a treatment protocol that may involve one to three sessions per week for several weeks. Often, the number of sessions will also taper off as your pet’s condition improves, so visits are scheduled less frequently.
